Expect The Unexpected
When someone mentions an eagle, what do you think of in your mind?
Big bird, national symbol, a high flyer, large wing span, graceful, strong claws, keen, sharp eyes, rapid flight, strength.
Native Americans tell a parable about the eagle: I have adapted it some to make it my own. Many thanks to those who teach me more of who I am everyday!
Welcome to Awareness of Who You Really Are!
Once upon a time on a large mountainside there was an eagle’s nest with three large eagle eggs inside. One day an earthquake rocked the mountain, causing one of the eggs to roll down to a chicken farm in the valley below. The chickens saw the egg and wanted to protect it. They put the eagle egg in amongst the chicken eggs.
Eventually the egg hatched and a beautiful eaglet was born. The chickens raised the eaglet the only way they knew how, like chickens. Whatever the chickens did, the eaglet did also. She thought she was a chicken just like them.
She learned to slurp grass like spaghetti, take dust baths, forage for bugs, seeds and worms, and blades of grass. She was taught to run, jump, lay in the sun and carry around twigs and leaves. She even learned to build a nest on the ground.
Her movement was restricted to the farm, just like all of the other chickens. Even when the cats and dogs went for them teasingly, they would run away as a flock because they could not fly away. This was all that she thought she could do. So that was all she was able to do. This was the accepted life; this was her life, which will only last for about five years, as this is the normal lifespan for a chicken.
On many occasions the eagle would look up to the skies above and notice a group of doves flying over. She said to her chicken brothers: “I wish I could fly like those birds one day.” Her chicken brothers and sisters laughed at her and said: “Get real girl, you know that chickens cannot fly.” She would always cower away with disappointment because she loved her home and family, but deep down something was missing. Her eagle spirit cried out for more.
The young eagle was in the yard yet another day and looked up into the sky and this time saw the biggest bird she had ever seen. It was full grown eagle. She was very impressed and asked the hens and roosters, who is that? That is an eagle, he belongs in the sky, and we are chickens and belong to the earth. We live on the ground.
The king of the sky was coming closer and closer. The chickens began to run for cover, as they were afraid. He came fast down to grab them and prey on them. When he came closer he was puzzled to see a most unusual sight, a spectacle really so he slowed his flight and soared a bit as to have another look and see what was happening: an eagle playing with chickens?
The big eagle then ventured down to see what was happening. The chickens started running away, fearing that the big eagle was about to attack them. The big eagle went right above to the little eaglet, who was trembling with fear, yet full of curiosity and asked her what she was doing there.
The little one answered that she was a chicken living with her brothers and sisters and begged the big eagle not to hurt her like the cats and dogs sometimes did. The response from the big eagle was:
“You don’t need to be afraid of me. We are the same. You are an eagle and not a chicken. You have to act with pride like the eagle that you are.”
He then landed on a tree and spoke to the young bird again and said
“What are you doing down there with those chickens”?
and she said, why I am a chicken, that is why.
Who told you that you are a chicken you’re not a chicken you’re and eagle. She asked him, what is an eagle and she was told that eagles are the king and the queen of the sky.
Now flap your wings and come up here!
She said “I can’t fly, if you are indeed king of the sky why don’t you know that chickens can’t fly”?
You are not chicken; you have a sharp beak and claws, spread your wings and see how large they are! You are an eagle! The Ground is not your place. You belong to sky. You are queen of the birds! Spread your wings and fly.
The little eaglet still did not believe the big eagle. So the big eagle went on to prove that they were the same by dragging the little eagle to a puddle of water that reflected their faces.
Still this was not enough to convince the little eagle. So the big eagle grabbed the little one by the neck and went to the roof of the farmhouse. He pushed the little eaglet to the edge. The little eagle fell with a thud without using her wings.
The full grown eagle said didn’t I tell you you’re not a chicken you’re a eagle; now flap your wings and fly because eagles are the king and queen of the sky. She began to flap her wings gently and she began to rise higher than she had ever been, she froze in fear and fright and quickly landed, She was now on the fence post.
The full grown eagle said “sit next to me and let me tell you who you are. You mother and your father are the king and queens of the sky”.
So she cried out to her chicken friends and said “this eagle is telling me who I am. I am so confused and at the same time so curious. He is sharing my history. Please come close and listen. Why don’t you want to hear it?”
Tom the eaglets brother said “you better get down here before you get in trouble and by the way you have been happy right here”.
The full grown eagle said leave her alone, she has been denied her true identity, and must have a chance to learn whom she really is.
The little eagle said “tell me more why doesn’t my hair lay down like the rest of the chickens.”
“I told you that you are not a chicken you’re a eagle. You are a daughter of the king and queen of the sky. See that on top of your head? That is your crown because you are a queen.”
The big eagle, growing impatient, went down again to take the little one much higher up in the air. To the top of that mountain, near the eagles nest. The big eagle then let go and the little one, falling fast and fearing that she was going to die, started to feel her wings spread and she began to fly.
Her spirit also began to soar as she glided in the air. She was now free to be who she was created to be. She realized then that everything the king of the sky had told her was true- She is indeed an eagle, a queen of the sky.
She flew over the coop- looked down below at her chicken brothers and sisters. She loved them, she swooped them, her coop brothers and sisters were astonished and began to call to her to come home where it was safe, to come back to where she belonged, they tried to warn her with their alarm cries and when she didn’t return to the ground that had held her for so long, the chickens could not understand. They became afraid of her. The queen of the sky realized who she is and became part of the sky she was created to live in. She was now home.
The glory of being an eagle was recaptured. The glory of eating fish, and other mammals. The glory of living longer. The glory to enjoy a lifespan of over 20 years. The glory of fending for herself. The glory of flying long distances. The glory of hunting alone, with great precision. The glory of hard work, and great self-reliance. The glory of learning everything. Of being a teacher and a student of the sky. The glory of knowing herself. The glory of freedom and independence.
Thank to to Amazon for these images! As many of you know, I use the eagle and chickens pictured here in my live presentations. I have purchased them. These visual process with these animals allow us to walk into a powerful space of Awareness and being in the moment!
