Adoption is not one color, nor represented by one texture. It is not one shade or hue. It is millions of various shades. Some threads change color mid stream from the brightest yellows to the darkest blacks. Some change from a pale blue whisper of wisdom to a deep purple of perspective. Others transform from a tender tan seedling, to the deep green of a mighty oak leaf.
Some threads appear to be almost invisible like the delicate web spun by an ambitious spider. Others are hearty, robust and strong much like the burlap surrounding without judgment, the roots of that same mighty oak. Make no mistake dear ones, each are necessary and hold a space for confusion, understanding, ownership and conscious choice.
In addition to these fibers, there are the solids, the wools, the cottons and the metallic. They breathe life into the design and are foundational. They provide structure and order to the tapestry. Each one of these fabrics are naturally created and fashioned to keep the pattern alive and vibrant.
Adoption is not always beautiful. Adoption is not always ugly. It is too marvelous for words and too complex to fully understand. A simple word or phrase cannot contain the height and depth of it’s impact. It is so very public and at the same time, intimate and humbly sacred.
How we observe and define our relationship with adoption depends on the threads we hold and the story we create around each one. This is our truth, our unique tapestry and in it we acknowledge the secrets, the mysteries and the gifts woven into the fabric of our identity.
